The story of Pahari paintings first began in Basohli, in the Jammu region. From where this style of painting derives its name, Basohli art is a blend of various traditions, which led to its outstretch of practice for the art during the medieval time in the regions of Kashmir. The traditional folk art of Basohli became one of the most prized heritage of the hills. The ethereal art was first said to have emerged in the 17th and 18th centuries as a distinctive style of painting fusing Hindu mythology and Mughal miniature techniques. Stories about the famous Pal rulers, Raja Sangram Pal and Raja Kirpal Pal, seem to be associated with the Basholi paintings as the brothers were great supporters of the art.
It has been said that under the rule of Raja Kirpal Pal, a painter named Devidasa illustrated miniatures for Rasamanjari in 1694 A.D. The other sets of Rasamanjari seem to have the same sense of style, from the same period but drawn by a different hand. These paintings are now found to be allocated in different parts of the world.
These paintings are often designed vigorously with a touch of decorative simplicity along with the large essence of suggestive mural art. In several examples of the painting, the art is often associated with some significant features such as the peculiar sloping forehead and very large expressive eyes, shaped like lotus petals, some distinctive characteristics, making the beautiful pieces of art exclusive. A remarkable feature is the occasional use of fragments of beetle's wings to represent jewelry, and then there is the peculiar character of the architecture, with turrets, paneled doors, latticed windows, and plinths ending in grotesque heads. The trees portrayed in the work of art are additionally figurative, to lovesick heroines, which appeared to be hanging around under the willows, alongside the ripe mangoes expressing the ladies' charm. The cows are likewise the fundamental piece of the Basohli canvases. Furthermore, the transparent dress of women and clothes of men depicts a certain extent of Moghul style. In Kangra style, the cows are well fed and healthy while in the Basohli artistic creations the dairy cattle are lean with enormous ear, turned horns and wild eyes of the variety which can be found in Jammu.
